Hoppers don't work

I have an issue where if I place a hopper and attach it to a chest (with shift), the items from the hopper don’t pass t the chest. Is there something wrong in what I am doing, or they just don’t work that way?
Have you did /chopper on ? You need to use that command before. You can place a hopper like that,it will still connect to the chest.
I think you just need to do that command, it’ll work.
-MaxTy ^^, I had no idea that this is the way I had to do it. It worked btw, but you have to target both the hopper and the chest if anyone else wonders
From minecraft Logic, u first place a block where the chest would go, then u put the hopper on top of it and then remove the block and fill it with a chest. I am not sure with the /chopper, but ast least you solved the issue.
