Antigrief Piston or Sign on Piston

I was just wondering how easy/hard it is to add piston to protected blocks like chest or furnace. Now to protect a piston is to put a sign on it. Unfortunately, it wont move after that. Any ideas?
Join a town, everything is protected.
Well I was thinking of making stuff in the end and the nether.
